Credit Where Credit is Due

The site owner and I both agree that Daily Kos Watch should not be a Kos-bashing site, but a blog where Daily Kos I-P is tracked and discussed. This means that when there is anti-Semitism expressed on Daily Kos, or when Israel is unfairly smacked around on that site, we will point it out here and discuss it.

However, it strikes me as only fair that when members of the Daily Kos I-P community do the right thing it should also be acknowledged. In a diary published today by Tom J, one commenter made the following observation:

"Israeli's are scum."

Nice.

For those of you who are not Trusted Users on Daily Kos the link will not work because the comment has been "Hide Rated" by other Daily Kos members. This is a good thing because it is the way that "Kossacks" express their disapproval of a given comment. As I write, 16 members expressed their disapproval including:

mattman, capelza, jon the antizionist jew, Karmafish, tazz, Tom J, heathlander, dmsarad, Terra Mystica, RandomActsOfReason, unspeakable, BFSkinner, Dexter, soysauce, palestinian professor, GillesDeleuze
The names on this list include both supporters of Israel and critics of Israel, both Jewish members and non-Jewish members, including several Arab members.

Credit where credit is due.

  1. Agreed, and credit should be given to the folks that troll-rated such a hateful comment. I've seen much more cross-over troll-rating lately, which is a good thing. That being said, the comment you linked to is kind of a no-brainer (from a no-brain). It's obvious and egregious. There's still quite of bit of mouth-frothing vitriol spewed out daily that gets uprated.

  2. Thanks Paul,

here is something a little unusual, tho off topic.

It's 9:35 PM PST and I just logged on to Lefty Coaster's most recent diary and for some reason, I cannot rate his tip jar.

I mean, right below it is MomCat's comment (whoever she is) and I can rate her and everything else, but there is no box for Lefty's tip jar.

I can also go to any other diary and rate their tip jar, but not Lefty's.

It's just unusual and it makes me wonder.

    This is odd.

Anyway, yeah, there is quite a bit of mouth-frothing vitriol spewed daily.

Please help us catalog it here.

  3. Karma, you can't rate the tip jar because that comment is over 24 hours old. With the pre-posting tip jar you can do that.

  4. Hmmph!

Yup... he pre-posted a tip jar.

I did not know that people did that... I'm still not sure what it means, but no nefarious anti-Zionist conspiracy here.

    Move along.

    :O)

    Thanks Ambrose.

  5. Isn't that the whole thing though? I am supposed to give out kudos for HRing a comment that says "Israeli's are scum?"

This is the problem with Kos. The only comments that the P side agrees are HRable are ones like the above, while each of us is called a racist and a bigot becuase we support Israel.

    Regards,

    DKW

  6. I agree with DKW.

I am not giving DKos any credit for troll-rating "Israelis are scum," because it goes without saying such a thing should be troll rated.

When more insidious forms of hatred are troll rated, I will give Daily Kos credit. I specifically refer to the troll rating of the "Israel controls American foreign policy" lie, aka Walt/Mersheimer.

This vile statement should be troll rated, but instead, whole diaries are written to that effect. It is based upon an antisemitic, "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" canard, and is deeply offensive.

In a way, it is a bad thing that "Israelis are scum" was troll rated. It makes Daily Kos almost look respectable on Israeli-Arab issues, when it is far from respectable. This troll rate is a form of a useful fiction so Kossacks can go to bed at night thinking they do not frequent a blog that tacitly supports antisemitism, when in fact, Daily Kos does openly support antisemitism, through their frequent support of Walt/Mersheimer libels. (as just one example amongst many)

  7. whats even sadder is when people actually get angry when others point out that there's no real difference between Hamas and Al-Qaeda's goals and vision, and that the only reason they fight is for influence, not because Hamas dislikes Islamic terror. Look at RobertMichaels post calling out how Al-Qaeda and Hamas collaborated in the past as well, and see how unspeakable calls it "propaganda" and demonizes Likud as they all do. Likud may not be the best party, but the way they look at it thru D vs. R and try to project the US politics onto it is so assenine. How do "liberals" defend Hamas, and even the PLO, given their principles? Honestly.

  8. Hi Florence,

nice to see you here... whomever you may be over at the other place.

You're right, of course, that the "Israel controls the US government" theme is common on Daily Kos and represents obvious anti-Semitism. Anyone who knows anything at all about anti-Jewish racism understands that it often traditionally took the form of a Jewish conspiracy to control foreign governments. This is straight out of the Protocols and is precisely what the Nazis believed.

That being the case, I am always dumbfounded when I see it pop up on Daily Kos. The reason that they can justify it is because AIPAC is, in fact, powerful. But is it more powerful than the NRA? Is it more powerful then the AARP? Is it more powerful than any number multi-national corporations that influence Congress?

    No way.
